brown leaves cling to life
loathe to leave their lofty perch
roots await their warmth

sustenance for growth
shared dream of next year’s greening
spring’s awakening

    Here, a few red vanguards have been appearing, and a few yellow spears, too.
    But for now, the waiting and some wilting as everything winds down, before the big bang, a month of colorful turning and thinning.
    After that, no more ignoring the brown and bronze turning to long shadow.
